Self Help, Peer Support, Recovery

Welcome!

As of June 22, 2009 the partner organizations of the Self Help Alliance have officially merged and been incorporated as The Self Help Alliance of Waterloo Wellington. In recognition of this merger, all of our sites will now be represented by one website. For more information, please visit our history page.

Please explore our site and feel free to provide us with any and all types of feedback.

www.self-help-alliance.ca is for you, the members and online users, and we want it to be as informative and helpful as possible.

- Self Help Alliance’s Kitchener Resource Facilitator Amanda Bourassa was provided with the opportunity to take the Ontario Peer Development Initiative’s (OPDI) newly developed “Peer Support Core Skills Training” as well as the “Train The Trainer Program”.  As an OPDI trainer of the program, Amanda received the support of the Self Help Alliance to provide the training out of the Kitchener site to staff and volunteers of local Consumer Survivor Initiative’s (CSI).  The training was successful and participants felt they learned valuable information about Peer Support.  We hope to be able to offer this again in the future.

The Self Help Alliance (SHA) is a non-profit organization for individuals who are or have previously experienced mental health and/or addiction issues.

The centres are non - judgmental, inclusive, and safe places that incorporate education, resources, peer support and recovery groups.

The SHA has Self Help Recovery Centres that provide an environment of empowerment and inclusiveness to all members of the community.

The Centres have a spirit of togetherness, which helps to break the isolation and feelings of being alone with a mental illness.

The Self Help Alliance services provide a safe place to have individuals come together to network and give peer support to each other. The members give hope to one another in knowing that they do not have to face their mental health and/or addiction issues alone.

The SHA services allow for an environment of "family" for those who struggle with the stigma of a mental health and/or addiction issue in our society.

Also, the SHA offers a space for community members who want to help themselves overcome their struggles and move onto their recovery.

"Self Help" is a journey to recovery and understanding within one's life.

In order to help someone, one must help themselves first.
